Kogi Poly Suspends Seven Lecturers as Probe into Sex-for-Marks, Cultism Allegations Begins

The management of Kogi State Polytechnic, Lokoja, has suspended seven lecturers over separate allegations of misconduct, including unauthorized sales of handouts and textbooks, and sexual harassment, as the institution investigates wider claims of sex-for-marks, cultism, and other disciplinary violations.

In a statement issued on Sunday in Lokoja, the institution's spokesperson, John Onimisi, disclosed that six lecturers were suspended on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, for allegedly engaging in the unauthorized sale of handouts and textbooks. He added that another lecturer was suspended over an allegation of sexual harassment.

The suspensions come amid growing concerns over reports of sexual harassment, cult-related activities, and declining discipline within the institution.

According to sources within the polytechnic, some lecturers allegedly demanded sexual favors or money from female students in exchange for passing grades. The sources also claimed that cult activities had resurfaced on campus and that disciplinary measures introduced by the previous administration had weakened, allowing misconduct among staff and students to increase.

The sources further alleged that female students who reported cases of sexual harassment received little institutional support and, in some instances, were intimidated. They also claimed that cult groups had resumed nocturnal meetings on campus despite previous efforts to eliminate such activities.

Additional allegations included the return of compulsory handout sales, reduced enforcement of the institution's dress code, and lax implementation of student identity card policies, all of which were said to have contributed to a decline in discipline on campus.

Responding to the allegations, Onimisi said the management was aware of the claims and had referred the matter to the institution's disciplinary committee for investigation.

He assured that appropriate action would be taken based on the committee's findings, adding that the outcome of the investigation would be made public in due course.
